What is the LEAF Initiative?
Launched in 2024, this five-year initiative enhances children’s health, development and learning by creating opportunities to experience nature-rich environments during the critical early years.
We focus on increasing children’s experiences in green space to support their mental, emotional and physical well-being while providing early childhood educators with tools and resources to create and maintain healthy learning environments.
This work aligns with UNL’s strategic priority to ensure all children have the opportunity to thrive.

Who is Involved?
LEAF Initiative includes an interdisciplinary team of researchers, designers, educators and community partners. We work in collaboration with Nebraska Extension and partner organizations specializing in design, education and child development. All team members and collaborators bring diverse expertise and perspectives that strengthen our mission.

Why Does Green Space Matter?
Simply put: Nature is good for kids. Research shows spending time in green space — areas with grass, trees or other green vegetation — has lasting positive effects on young children and lays the foundation for lifelong success.
Exposure to green space:
- Reduces stress and anxiety
- Enhances mood and well-being
- Improves focus and attention
- Boosts creativity and imagination
- Strengthens social skills
- Encourages active play
- Supports immune function
- Lowers obesity risk
Nebraska’s “Green Gap” is Growing
Nearly one in four Nebraska children face emotional, developmental or behavioral health problems, yet many lack daily exposure to nature. Limited time in green space can negatively affect their health and well-being. This initiative bridges the state’s “green gap” by creating healthy learning environments in early childhood programs, giving children more opportunities to engage with and benefit from nature.
